Numbness following brain surgery
I survived brain surgery at the age of 14 but it left me with a numbness in the head that has grown more and more painful since then.
Now at the age of 27, I thought my life was about to come to an end very soon. Over the last 5 years, the right side of my body was just falling apart. It started with a neck pain, then it spread all the way down to the back, the knee, ankle. At the same time I started feeling a numbness creep into the right edge of my body, around my small toe and finger. I had lost considerable strength in my arm and leg...not to mention the numbing headache I had pretty much all the time.
I tried everything I guess. Went to see the doctors, neurologists, physiotherapist, acupuncturist. Did the brain scans and all. Nobody could find what my problem was. It all looked good in the scans. The best thing the neurologist came up with was to prescribe me nortriptyline, which is an anti-depressant. That was the worst thing ever for me...since I was never a depressed guy and this thing actually depressed me more than ever. I was a software engineering student at that time and for a software engineer, anti-depressants are suicidal since you can't even use your brain at all. For the first time as a student, I had to defer my exams.
As time went by, I had to gradually give up things I liked doing. Starting with gym, then jogging, then aikido, salsa ...I gave all up over the last 2 years. And one can guess the state of my personal life !
A friend, who works as a “structural integration therapist” (http://www.loveyourposture.ie/) suggested I should try Bikram yoga. And I have to say, this is the best discovery ever for me.
Its been roughly a month now since I started Bikram yoga and I felt the difference as from the first practice. Gradually my back , shoulder and neck pain got better. The feeling of numbness in my foot and hand eased away. And last Thursday, what happened was simply a miracle to me. I lay down in the final savasana at the end of practice and suddenly I felt this numbness in my head easing away....and in the space of 15-20 minutes, it was gone by around 70% . There was simply no headache at all.
Its been 13 years now since I had my surgery. And for the first time since as far as I can remember, I can sleep without any headache and feel the right side as well as my left side equally. Over the last 3-4 days, I recovered considerable strength in my right leg and arm. And I guess in a couple of weeks, I ll be all fit for salsa again : )
I cant thank Bikram Yoga and the teachers at Harolds Cross studio enough. You simply gave me back my life !

Rheumatoid Arthritis
I was diagnoised with Rheumatois Arthritis five years ago. Prior to this I had always being pretty active and wanted to remain so. Since then I have been gyming, swimming and cycling as much as I can.
Two months ago I started Bikram Yoga and nothing has helped me as much or made such a positive difference on my body.
Initially some of the postures were totally beyond my joints, however now I can attempt nearly all of them and I am amazed what I can do even in that short time. I went to see my Rheumatologist two weeks ago and she said my joints were 'excellent.' A word she has never used to describe them before. My pain levels are much lower than usual at this time of year (December) and I feel so much better and with far more energy. I can recommend Bikram Yoga enough for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
