Charity week at Bikram Yoga! November 15 through November 21
In celebration of Bikram Yoga being one year in the city, throughout the week beginning November 15, Bikram Yoga is donating all money taken for classes to take Irish drug addicts to Thamkrabok monastery in Thailand. Thamkrabok is a treatment centre for addicts and since it was founded in 1958 more than 100,000 addicts have passed through the centre that claims a 70% success rate.
Bikram Yoga will work closely with a detox centre to select individuals. It is hoped enough money will be raised to send out four addicts. Travel, insurance, food, accommodation and a donation to the monastery are the only costs. The monastery is two and a half hours north of Bangkok.
The treatment lasts four weeks, addicts get up at 5 am every morning. The first step of the treatment is to take the saija, a vow to complete the course. The purging takes place daily for the first five days, each afternoon at 5 pm. The monks give addicts a shot glass of medicine made from 108 different herbs, including tree bark. It serves to act as a magnet for toxins – physical, mental and spiritual. Addicts then drink water to help them vomit and purge. There are also two herbal steam baths per day. The monks emphasis not simply stopping drugs but also starting something new and there are classes to encourage this.
This is a grassroots effort, partly inspired by the film Adam and Paul. It is hoped it will become an annual charity drive.
Bikram Yoga has twenty-two classes a week, a timetable is available at www.bikramyoga.ie. The class is an uplifting, fun and challenging 26 posture series, practiced in a heated studio, lasting 90 minutes. It is designed to bring fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of the body. With a regular practice vibrant good health automatically follows. All teachers who teach at Bikram Yoga have been trained and certified by Bikram Choudhury at the Yoga College of India. For further information log onto www.bikramyoga.ie or call 411 3731.
Come to stretch the week of November 15 through 21 inclusive and bring along lots of friends!
