About Bikram
Bikram Choudhury is an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher, founder and president of Bikram's Yoga College of India. Originally from Calcutta, he now lives in Beverly Hills with his wife Rajashree and their two children. He began learning Hatha yoga under the auspices of Bishnu Ghosh (Paramahansa Yogananda's brother) at the age of five. At 12 years of age he was the youngest ever, National Yoga Champion of India, holding the title for three consecutive years. Bikram went on to pursue an athletic career as a marathon runner and to compete in Olympic-style weight lifting. At the age of 20, a weight-lifting accident crushed his knees, severely crippling him. Under the guidance of his guru, Bishnu Ghosh, Choudhury created the Bikram yoga series and restored his health.
Choudhury was educated in Calcutta and received his diploma in yoga training from Ghosh's College of Physical Education and the Yoga Cure Institute in 1965. Combining Eastern discipline with input from Western doctors and scientists, he perfected his comprehensive 26 posture system that is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. He conducted a three-year research project with medical experts at Tokyo University (1970-72) to provide scientific evidence that hatha yoga asanas aid in the prevention of degenerative and chronic diseases. During his time at Tokyo University he scientifically formulated and demonstrated yoga's ability to regenerate tissue and heal chronic ailments.
In 1972, he accepted an invitation from the American Medical Association and came to the United States. Off to a good start, his first student was President Nixon who was suffering from phlebitis. Using his sequence of asanas Choudhury had him back walking in less than a week. Thirty years later he oversees more than 700 affiliated Bikram yoga schools worldwide. |
