Yoga Etiquette

1. Come to class hydrated and on an empty stomach.
2. Remove your shoes in the lobby, use the rack provided.
3. Try to keep silent in the studio after class.
4. Please turn off your mobile phone and no beeping watches in class.
5. Bikram Yoga is not responsible for any items lost or stolen. You are welcome to take your valuables into class with you.
6. Beginners should ideally opt for the second row. You can keep an eye on those in front of you, it is easier to balance and you can judge your alignment better in the mirror.
7. Try not to stand directly in front of another student. Stagger each row.
8. Dress appropriately, as though you are going to the beach, less is more comfortable. White clothing will go transparent. If you have any problems with your feet, keep them covered with socks.
9. If you need to rest during class, sit down on your towel and drink some water. Please refrain from lying down, you will cool off more quickly sitting and the teacher will see that you are okay.
10. It is important to stay until the end of class. Postures towards the end of the series are designed to cool you down, calm you and complete the class. Even if you feel like leaving, sit down, drink water and you will feel okay in a matter of minutes. Try to do one set of each of the last postures. After a few weeks you will no longer feel like leaving.
11. If you have any medical conditions/injuries, please advise the teacher. Certain postures should be taken easy at first, paradoxically they are the postures that will help you. E.g. if you have high blood pressure, go easy in the backward bends. Backward bending positions create pressure in the chest and therefore the heart. However, high blood pressure responds quickly to a regular yoga practice and it should stabilize in a matter of weeks.
12. All teachers at Bikram Yoga have been trained and certified by Bikram Choudhury, the yogi who devised the series. If you have any questions, teachers will be available in the lobby after class.
